Give the Gift of Reading this Holiday Season {Guest Post}

3 Reasons You Should Give the Gift of Reading this Holiday Season

The holiday season is quickly approaching, with its turkeys and snowmen and sleigh bells and festivities. Family and friends will gather, gratitude will be expressed, cheer will be felt, and most likely gifts will be exchanged. The flurry of holiday shopping can be stressful as you search for the perfect gift that’s both unique, fun, and useful, but it doesn’t have to be. This holiday season, give your children the gift of reading. It’s an investment in their future, a gift you can enjoy with them, and an opportunity to help them be excited about reading and see the value you place on it.

An Investment in Their Future

The statistics surrounding reading are sometimes truly mind-blowing. When children read and are read to, their vocabulary expands, their math aptitude increases, and their likelihood of scoring in the top percentiles on standardized testing skyrockets. Plus, if you start early enough, their expected lifetime earnings increase by $50,000 per year for every year they are read to between infancy and entering preschool. These are some serious benefits. Statistics aside, there is a magic about reading that enhances creativity and opens all of our minds to new ways of viewing the world and interacting with it. In the words of C.S. Lewis: “Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.”

A Gift You Can Enjoy Together

Reading together is a special bonding experience between parents (or grandparents) and the children in their lives. Having new books to read together is an opportunity to sit close together and add something to your shared understanding of the world. You’ll get those precious quiet minutes together, and the added bonus of being able to remind your munchkin how so-and-so in such-and-such book dealt with such-and-such problem. Win-win-win.

An Opportunity to Fall in Love With Reading

Giving your children books for the holidays sends them the signal that books are exciting, and worthy of gifting! The excitement of unwrapping a beautifully wrapped package and finding a book inside helps subconsciously transfer this excitement to reading itself, and is a philosophy that we at Bookroo live by year round, and not just during the holiday season. It’s our mission to help children fall in love with reading, while at the same time making the experience an affordable and convenient one for parents. Packages addressed to the children arrive every month containing 2-3 adorably wrapped books, with a little personal note inside, and it makes a difference--kids are excited about reading!
